Strange Fish?

I was fishing with some friends near the Light house a few years back and caught a fish that I have no idea what it was.
So, here's a question for the locals!
The fish was doo doo brown, wide mouth, body was like a catch fish, no scales (that I remember?) and extremely ugly. Didn't want the critter in my boat! Looked something like a ling cod? (I've only seen pictures of them)
I don't have a picture of the fish. I know that would help. But, surely I am not the only one to catch one these!
I've fished in salt water since before I was old enough to walk. We have always caught a fish that we called an "ugly fish", but it's body is more short and stumpy, like a bream, it is brown though.
Any Ideas?

If it looked like a ling could have been a Remora.

No scales, not a Lizard fish. Really sounds like a Toad Fish.

Is that a stunned/dead trigger fish laying under the Remora?

pack a waterproof disposable camera in your boat bag.

I usually keep one. It was a last minute fishing trip we decided to take after watching FSU kill Clemson. Something to ease the pain!
We rented a boat from Shell Island, I didn't have anything but a rod and reel!
I do have a good one to share if someone can tell me how to insert pictures??

GC, being that you're from Winder I guess that makes you a Clemson fan. Congrats on the game this year, assuming that you still wanted Tommy. Good ole dad to the rescue.
I say it was a toad fish. They're extremely common but not often caught a lot on hook & line. If you snorkle & scallop you can often hear the males sounding off to mark territory. They sound like a submarine signal (I guess). They don't have scales and really are damn ugly.
By the way, my band used to play at Chips in Winder pretty regular but since I have kids I don't get out much anymore.

I am indeed a Clamson fan. I am originally from Clemson, SC. But, I have lived in georgia almost all my life.
I have been to Chips several times, it's about 3 miles from my house. They have a lot of good bands come to play there.
That's probably what it was!
We actually caught several of those "toad fish" about 3 miles south east of the light house! That was the first and only time I have ever run into'em!
