This comes from an interview with Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz who sits on two Homeland Security subcommittees relaying the responses from General Carter Ham heading up the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) who had direct responsibility for the situation.
General Ham told Chaffetz that the forces were available, but that no order to use them was given. Defense Secretary Panetta had claimed that the refusal to use force had come from him, General Dempsey and General Ham.
General Ham appears to have broken with that story and is taking no responsibility for the decision not to bail out the consulate and the Navy SEALS.

WHOSE FISH IS IT?
Re: General Ham contradicts Panetta on Benghazi
It is becoming more and more clear that they were left to die. This is incomprehensible.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!
Re: General Ham contradicts Panetta on Benghazi
I bet we will find out more about this (AFTER) the elections are over. Regardless, there should be heads rolling from the top down. If our Infantrymen, Marines, Navy etc. failed to provide support to their fellow troops under fire they would be court marshalled . BTW, we now have troops in training in Louisianna to be deployed to Afganastan, after which many have already served three years in Iraq. No wonder this country is so devided on so many issues. All I can say is keep your guns clean and your powder dry.

Watched the news with great care this past weekend and can say with some confidence that the Republicans have made a calculated move to 1) let this issue slow boil through the election thinking that the Obama administration's moves to avoid it are hurting them and 2) hold the card in their pockets in case Obama wins, whereupon they're going to go full-steam ahead to use it as a impeachment issue.
Ladies & gents that's politics, but this is one issue I wish WEREN'T being treated as a political card. Whole country, dems, reps, and independents alike should be outraged and demanding answers NOW. Questions like how in the world there are photos and stories documenting minute by minute the administration's reaction to the death of Osama Bin Laden and the hurricane monitoring, yet zero photos and notes from the 9/11 anniversary attacks, despite leaks that Obama, Biden, and Paneta met within minutes of the attacks.
One other thing to weigh... so let's just say that Obama does get re-elected and the issue does prove impeachable... the thought of any scenario that has even a 1% chance of putting crazy Uncle Joe in charge scares me every dayum bit as much as Obama being re-elected. I don't want crazy Uncle Joe within a 1000 miles of the nuclear football case... just sayin'.
