yamaha tilt problem

My 40 hp Yamaha wants to not tilt up when it has been sitting. I usually have it all the way down when in the yard. When i am getting ready to leave I will raise it for the road trip. Tonight it was clicking but the motor was not engaging. I kept at it and finally it moved. When I pushed the switch for down the motor would run.
Once it is up, it wants to not operate downward for a second then the motor will run if I keep at it on the switch.
Anybody got an idea on what ails it?

Is this happening with the switch on the motor or the shifter?

Check the T&T motor for rust! Mine has rusted badly twice now, replaced under warranty the first time, but is getting in bad shape again now and works with a hope and a prayer

Battery connections are the probable culprit. Check all of them. Start by loosening them. Then clean with a wire brush or sandpaper, both the battery posts and the electrical connectors. Apply a good corrosion preventative or dielectric grease and reconnect. Be sure the wing nuts are good and tight.
Pay special attention to the negative connections.
