Trolling Question

When I was a small child, my daddy would put out a white red head mirrolure plug behind the boat, give me the rod to hold and we would slowly troll down the river to the mouth or deeper holes near the mouth where he would start casting. That was in the days of black braided line, small wooden boats and open faced casting reels. It worked! I would often catch reds or trout.
I have tried several times on the flats but have not been successful.
Does anyone ever troll on the flats? How does it work or is this method "Gone With the Wind"?

IT STILL WORKS BUT YA DO MUCH BETTER BLIND CASTING TOP WATER OR SLOW SINKING PLUGS AND GRUBS.
MY OPINION.

I did the same thing years ago. We would troll a silver or gold spoon with a mullet strip from the belly and go up and down the edges of the oyster bars. We would catch mostly reds but not in great numbers. Seems we had better luck when we anchored up on the bars with a strong tide flow and fished with fiddler crabs we collected or mud minnows. It did seem though that the trolling method worked well when it was really cold for several days.

Thanks Pa and reelbad for your comments. We have a couple of grandchildren who are small and can hold onto a rod but not throw. Was thinking trolling might be another way they could fish. They do fish the flats with us but we've taught them to let the bait go out with the drift, away from the boat. They catch fish too!
