Motor Help!

Post by setty7 »

Well I messed up. The boat has not been cranked for a month. At first it wouldn't turn over so I put a charge on it for about an hour and a half. Went to crank and it turned over a couple times but would not stay started. Let it sit for about 45 minutes. Thought it might be flooded. Went out and tried it again and it wouldn't turn over. Flooded maybe? As yall may not it was cold yesterday so im sure it has a little effect on the motor? Thanks for yalls input and help.

Sounds like a loose/bad ground. Was the charger still connected to it when you tried cranking the second time?

I would stick a fresh battery on it. A lot of new motors will not crank with a low battery.

Also, you may have ethanol problems. If it doesn't crank and run with a fresh battery, take a 6 gallon portable tank with some fresh fuel in it and hook it directly to the motor then try again.

If neither of these suggestions get you going, you will have to head for one of the local mechanic shops.

If your sure the battery is good, most obvious, check connection at battery. Second most obvious, make sure it's in neutral. Next make sure your starter switch is working. If it is, try jumping over the starter selenoid, to see if your selenoid is working. It's an easy test to jump the solonoid off the main battery wire and see if that engages the starter. If the main power wire has 12.5+ volts and the starter wont engage, look at the solonoid or starter. If the starter will engage by jumping it, then check to see if your solonoid wire is getting power when you turn the key.

If the motor won't turn over after sitting on charge for 45 minutes and with the charger still connected, you have a bad connection somewhere "or a bad starter".
