1967 Johnson Sportwin / Motorguide w55 trolling motor issues

Hey guys. Ive been having some issues with my sportwin 9.5. Ran fine when I got it. It started to run bad a few weeks ago. I have now cleaned carb. Checked fuel lines. Replaced plugs. No difference, i now have checked and set points, pulled flywheel and turned motor until the gaps were at the widest point and adjusted them to .02.Still no luck. Starts up on the second pull, idles fine but when I put in into gear no power, not much more power than idle. I have slowly adjusted the low speed lean rich knob but still no luck. Let me know what you think the issue might be. Thanks.

Also I have a w55 MG wireless and when I went to use it the other day worked fine, but when I try to turn left or right no response. It seems like the motor is tight, I can help turn the motor but it is still tight. Do I have to replace the whole motor box?

YOUR HIGH SPEED JET IS STILL CLOGGED, GET SOME CHEM-TOOL FROM WALLY MART OR PARTS HOUSE, FILL THE FUEL BOWL WITH THE CEM-TOOL, FIRE THE ENGINE OFF, BE SURE TO HAVE THE FOOT IN WATER SO PUMP WILL WORK TO KEEP THE ENGINE COOL. WHEN THE CHEM-TOOL GETS INTO THE ENGINE IT WILL START RUNNING AT A VERY HIGH RPM UNTIL THE CHEM-TOOL IS USED UP. IT WILL DO NOT GOOD TO TURN OFF IGNITION AS IT WILL CONTINUE TO RUN UNTILL THE CHEM-TOOL IS COMPLETELY USED UP. I HAVE DONE THIS ON MANY OLDER ENGINES AND IT DID THE TRICK WHEN BLOWING OUT THE HIGH SPEED JET DID NOT WORK. GOOD LUCK.

By chance is this one of the old Johnson outboards that has the pump button on the tank? If so, that could be a problem. I had one that only ran when it was pointed AWAY from the boat ramp. I paddled that boat back accross many a lake...

Also- are you running non-ethanol fuel?

PA, thanks for the reply. I went out and bought some chemtool, all I could find is the chemtool fuel treatment. Tried it and still no luck. Also there is a "knocking" noise every once in awhile, but only in neutral. I am running non ethanol gas with sea foam treatment.

Is there exhaust coming out? if it has set up for a while, a dirt dobber may have stopped up the exhaust :o I had that happen with a chainsaw and a weed eater and the symptoms where the same as yours

Exhaust is fine. Runs the same with / without cowling. Also plenty of water spitting out.

Do you think you might have spun the hub? I'm not sure about smaller engines, but I've done it twice w my f150 and it seems similar to what you have going on. Good luck

I'm not sure about the hub. Works fine at idle speed in forward and reverse. Just seems like I'm not getting enough power when I give it gas. Not turning anywhere near the rpms. the "knocking" sound in neutral is a loud bang every 10-15 sec, and is another unknown issue.

Probably not a spun hub. When you put it in gear you will get hi rpm's but the prop won't spin. Listen to futch he probably has it nailed. Good luck

Is there a different chemtool I should be using rather than the fuel treatment?

That jerk/knock is SOP for those engines.
Pretty much goes away at higher RPM.

THAT KNOCK IS PROBABLY PRE-IGNITING. DID YOU GET THE LIQUID TYPE OF CHEM-TOOL OR THE SPRAY. THE LIQUID TYPE YOU CAN JUST POUR FROM THE CAN INTO THE FUEL BOWL OF THE ENGINE.

It was liquid, I poured it in and I did not notice a change in rpms...
