VHF will not receive?

Post by Seachaser »

When I turn it on, there is no audible sound, and then no sound when I dial the squelch. I can send but not receive. Where should I trouble shoot, or is the unit shot? It is a Uniden. Thanks!

Sounds like the speaker is blown.

Send it to the factory or is it worth it?

To be honest, I would just replace it. Unless it is under warranty.

Trash the Uniden, get a Standard Horizon.

Short of a cell phone it's an important safety line. Get a quality radio! Standard has a good speaker, I also have a ray marine that I like it has simpler controls as some get to complicated.

While you're changing the radio, check the coaxial where it connects to the antenna and clean away any corrosion or anodized surfaces. Like the others I have a Standard Horizon purchased back in 2004. Still works fine. Occasionally check all the connections to ensure no corrosion builds up. I went as far as using battery terminal spray. The horizon claims it is so waterproof that it will continue to broadcast submerged in up to 3 feet of water. Sounds kind of funny unless you are in an overturned or swamped vessel.... :o

Fixed it. It was the antenna coax cable. The solder had come loose at the contact point. Thanks guys.

What kind of boat do you have it on? You may be able to get by with a hand held. I use one on my jon boat.
