St Marks NWR - 14 Apr

Post by Terrier »

Fished the wash bar at the refuge this morning for about 1 1/2 hours between the rain - the water felt 'ripe' with lots of baitfish and mullet. Didn't have enough time to figure things out but did get a nice 22" trout on an olive over tan clouser. I also snagged mullet on consecutive casts - both were about 12" long. Those and a big pinfish rounded out the morning.

The trout was eating pogies:

I did find some worms in the trout, more than I usually see.

Nice job with the long pole! I need to find a pattern to imitate those baitfish and visit those bars on a changing tide. I checked the full stomach of a Redfish this morning and it had 2 Lizard fish (I think) about the same size as those.

I'm kinda surprised the trout took a small clouser, since she keying on much larger prey. I may have to try a puglisi minnow pattern.
