My son and I fished Keaton this weekend. Both days were really good by my standards.

Friday - Fished North in 3-5 foot of water. Caught 5 in the morning using white gulp jerk shads under a cork. One fish at 21 inches and the other 4 in the 17-19 inch range. Went back out in the afternoon and could only manage 3 in the lower end of the slot. Not a lot of short fish but a lot of lady fish.

Saturday - Fished South between Piney Point and Grassy Island. Wind was blowing out so I would start my drift in about 2.5 feet of water. Fished the morning using mirro mullet (subsurface)in a green pearl color. Kind of overcast so I was able to stay with the plugs for a little longer than normal. We caught four between 18 and 21 inches. They would hammer that mirromullet. My son had never caught a trout on a plug so he thought that was great. After lunch on Saturday we went back out and picked up 5 more on the white jerk shads under a cork. Tried the Z man several times with no luck. I could see Grassy island from where we were at in the morning and it looked like bumper to bumper boats.

This was my first time fishing Keaton, usually fish St Marks. My observations were that you don't catch as many fish in total but it is easier to come by a keeper there. Is this what everyone else experiences?

Sounds like we were in the same general area on Saturday. There was a ton of boats over there. We found a few, but once the wind died it was hard to fish that clear water. Never fished St.Marks, so I can't compare to much, but fishing out of Keaton is usually pretty consistent for keeper sized fish. Of course there are a lot of shorts mixed in as well depending on what you are throwing at them.
