My mom lives over on the O River and I see about 20 Gar for every one Bass - so I got to thinking. Anybody actually tried catching these? Does the frayed rope trick work?

It works. We used to catch em at stoutamire and pine creek landing. We would tie it on the bend in the hook, leave about 5-6 inches off each end and put a piece of cut fish on it.They were hard to clean but good to eat. Idk if you can still keep em.

They caught gar in the river below Talquin dam for study purposes some thirty plus years ago by using the rope method. The gar would hook themselves on the rope, no bait needed. The method was to tie off about a three foot piece of rope to a floating jug that had been unravaled and combed out in small strands so their teeth would get caught and not hurt the gar, which were then studied and released. Not sure what the study was about but they would keep them in large concrete holding tanks that are close to the old boat ramp at Ed and Burnice fish camp.
