Found this beauty under the 98 bridge on the Wakulla last weekend. It was right in the channel at the bottom and is in really good condition. Can anyone tell me roughly how old this can is? I'm a just a whipper snapper at 25 years old and dont remember cans ever looking like that. I'm going to assume it hasn't always been black...

If I remember correctly it would have been the mid 80's when they quit making the pop tops that pulled all the way off so it would be from before then.

Suweet! Too bad its not a PBR.
The first pull-tab (pop-top) beer cans appeared in 1963. Consumers loved them, but these easily removable strips of metal caused a whole new set of problems. Litterbugs seemed determined to scatter the sharp metal tabs everywhere. I think that's why flip-flops came out. The first stay-tab beer can was introduced in 1975, and has remained relatively unchanged since.
So pretty good chance your can is between 1968 and 1978. :ugeek:

That looks like an all aluminum can. I remember going to Busch Gardens during the early 70's and watching the canning process. It was neat to see full cans of beer pass under a machine that sealed a lid on it. If I remember correctly the lid went on and then was rolled over to seal it to the can.

I turned 16 in 1980 and there wasn't much to do in Sowega but go to bonfire parties in pecan groves and drink beer. I'm pretty sure I remember some of the brands still had the pull off tops at that time but they disappeared after that. We used to complain because the original non pull off kind stuck up far enough to poke you in the nose.

I don't remember them being anything but red/white. This one lost its color.

According to this site they changed the label in 1980 to what my can reads now. It's amazing what you can find on google now.

We used to make chains out of the pop top tabs. I had one about 10 feet long. My old man found it when he was going through the trunk of my car to recover some of his tools. Busted!!!
