Addition to the arsenal.

This is the latest addition to my gun cabinet, its a Mossberg 500 pump action 20ga, with a Hushpower moderator.
The moderator reduces the decibels by 70+%.
Purchased to deal with crows around dairy farms and general winged vermin in the proximity of buildings and dwellings.

Its a beast, weighing just under 8lbs , is front heavy, 55 inches overall, is choked "full" and tends to fire low.
It takes some getting use to, but its surprising how quickly you get use to the strange view down the barrels and compensate for all the other factors mentioned.

I am using standard (not subsonic) 1oz loads of No 6 shot, felt wads (compulsory, as plastic can catch in the mod ports) and already have shot flying crows at 40+ yards.
I have also missed a few second shots, which I would have expected to have taken with any of my standard guns, all of which weigh less than 6 1/2lbs.
The length of the gun makes moving swiftly from one target to another difficult.
Despite this I am getting some good shot/kill ratios, which I hope to improve on.
When I can come to terms with "wasting" some cartridges, I will take it to a Clay Ground and have a few rounds of 100 sporting clays to get more proficient with the swing, alternatively I could work out with weights, but thats not likely to happen.

HEY BRIAN, GOOD TO SEE A POST FROM YOU, THAT LONG GUN IS LIKE THE 36 IN. DBL. BARREL ITHICA 12 GA. TURKEY GUN I HAVE, IT TO IS HEAVY, HAVENT SHOT IT IN ABOUT 10 YRS SINCE I HAVE A BAD ROTATOR CUP IN MY RIGHT SHOULDER. THAT THING KICKS LIKE A MULE BUT IT WOULD BRING DOWN A TURKEY IN FLIGHT , NOT MANY SHOTGUNS HAVE THAT CAPABILITY. GOOD HEARING FROM YOU, GIVE THE MISSES A HUG FOR ME.

I assume the "moderator" is a silencer. What hoops do you have to jump through there to get one? It is ridiculous here what you have to do to get a silencer. 200 bux and a 6 month wait for the bureaucracy to get the paperwork done.

NEVER understood why silencers are illegal in the first place here in the states. That is like saying a car muffler is illegal because they can not hear you speeding.....

I had no problems in adding this shotgun (complete with moderator/silencer) to my Shotgun Certificate.
If it had been a firearm (rifled long barrel, or shotgun with a magazine in excess of 3) I would have had to show the silencer as a separate item on my Firearms Certificate.
Mainly because that silencer could probably be used on a number of different rifles.

In either case I do not have to get advance approval, once the transaction is complete, both parties (being certificate holders) send completed documentation, date, gun make, model, serial numbers , etc., to the Police and they adjust their records accordingly.
I think the Authorities attitude to silencers is that the guns are mainly being used for live quarry shooting and a silencer makes that more efficient and obviously the noise reduction has a social benefit.

The hoop jumping comes in getting the certificates in the first place.
Not easy things to get, but very easy things to lose.

Dubble, its a long read, but I recommend highly the book "Unintended Consequences", which explains how many of our gun laws slipped through undefended cases.

Greetings Cran.

You probably don't want to consider any thing that would add weight, but removing the butt plate and placing some lead at the back of the stock would adjust the balance some for you. On a 20 gauge of that weight, recoil may not be an issue but the weight in the rear would also benefit as well. You could always mount it on some wheels and just make an artillery piece out of it.
