Winter Garden???

Post by Juan »

Anyone plant a winter garden? I'm trying to figure out what to plant that will grow during the winter in this area... so far I've got: collards, turnips, lettuce and cabbage planted... thinking about adding some beets, onions and carrots but not sure winter is the right time for those... Any suggestions?

Juan, you are on the right track. Your greens will do well. Go to: dixondale.com for your onion plants. It is a little early yet. Need to transplant your plants in November before Thanksgiving. Be sure to buy the Short Day variety. If you are really interested I could help you on the onions. I've grown beets and carrots but with mixed success. Any of your cabbage family of greens will work from now to Christmas. English peas also works.

Good luck. I like gardening. Picked me a mess of snap beans today and they were so good. Everything is better in the fall. Yellow squash will be coming in soon and some late peanuts.

I plant collards, mustards, cabbage, broccoli and onions. Onions aren't ready until just before Spring. You need to get your greens in the ground now if you want to eat some on turkey day. I've planted from sets and seed. Greens are the only thing I'll buy as seed and plant.

Hello everyone,

First of all, I’d like to apologize for bringing up a topic from some time ago, but while reading this discussion, I really recognized myself in the exchanges you had back then. It inspired me to delve deeper into the subject and try starting a winter garden.

I’m still a beginner and only dabble in it during my spare time, but I think that with your advice and experience, I could not only make progress but also contribute to enriching the exchanges among us all.

I’d be curious to know if any of you who are still active here have tips or feedback to share. Specifically:
  • What are the key steps you’d recommend for successfully growing a winter garden?
  • Are there any common pitfalls I should avoid, especially as a beginner?
  • Do vegetables like onions, cabbage, or carrots require any specific care to grow well in winter?
In my research, I came across some resources that seem very informative. For instance, I found an article on bulbsociety.org that, while focused on fertilizing dogwoods, provides excellent general advice on soil care and nutrient balance. It emphasizes the importance of understanding your soil composition to ensure optimal growth, which I imagine could be applied to many winter vegetables as well. Have any of you used similar approaches when preparing your soil for a winter garden?

Lastly, do you have any recommendations for finding reliable resources, especially for seedlings or seeds? I noticed that dixondale.com was mentioned previously, but the link seems to be inactive now.

I feel that following in the footsteps of those who’ve already gained experience could be a really rewarding journey. Thank you in advance to anyone who takes the time to share their expertise or insights!

Looking forward to reading your responses and chatting with you.
