Econfina - Saturday 10/19

Well, we could not put in till around noon, but headed out to the first bird rack area and started a drift for what we thought was going to be an evening of catching a few trout.

Drifted for about 20 minutes, and Cindy had a HARD hit. She worked it for about 5 minutes and boated a Jack Cravelle. I went ahead and put the 15 incher in the chest, because I have heard if you filet just the meat above the backbone, then marinate it, it is not too bad. Gonna report back on that one.

Then a little lull with no bites, I was wondering if the trout were gonna be out that deep (8 to 10 ft). As the day went on, I got the answer....NO!

Next hit was on my rod, and it was a hard hit too. I was thinking cobia, because it was all up under the boat, and pulling down hard. Up came a big surprise. I first said another Jack, but nope, a 15 inch Pompano!

I was feeling pretty good and thinking the day might not turn out too bad after all. Next hit was Cindy's rod, and up came a nice 15 inch flounder! We were stuck on 15 today...

After that, the wind died to nothing, the bite stopped, and dark clouds began to move in. The rain started about 5 pm and got hard, so we headed for the hill.

Not a lot of fish, but good variety!

PS: Any good ideas on the pompano? I have heard that you just gut 'em and cook em whole...

I enjoy "baked rock salt pompano." YouTube it. It's quite easy and very delicious. :lick:
As for the Jack, they taste terrible. The meat is almost red and it's just not good. :thumbdown:

You are one lucky man to be able to fish and fish with your wife! Consider being out on the water with her reward enough without catching fish but you did well there also. Two of the three fish you caught are excellent fish to eat. Some days are like that. Hopefully the next trip will produce more fish.

Keaton is getting "HOT" on the fish bite. Hopefully it will spread into your area soon.

Well, she is not the wife yet. Fiance....But yes, it would have been worth it even with no fish. She is in school and will be an RN in a few months. It has been a year with out much of anything recreational, including fishing. Studying took top priority.

Just checking back in with a taste report!

Of course, the flounder was delicious, and it is gone!

The Pompano is a different kind of taste. I can say, I liked it a lot, but you KNOW you are eating fish. It let's you know what it is, and does not apologize.....It is also a little fatty, not overbearing, but just a little of that "bacon fat" type oily stuff.

Yes, I was a virgin Pompano eater, and I can honestly say, I would do it again. Cindy on the other hand, did not care for the stronger taste. and preferred the Flounder.
