Thinking about getting me a pin fish trap for inshore fishing and was wondering if there are any favorites you might want to share (brand, size, model, etc..).

AMS in Medart makes most of the ones you see for sale around here.
They have tons in stock.

So round (cylindrical) or rectangular cube shapes are your basic choices. I've had both, and lean toward the cube shape because it is easier to store and transport. I used to think the bigger the better, but have changed my mind about that. Small is all you need for recreational use. Like bman said, AMS in Medart is worth the trip..

Learn all the tricks of hiding it when you put it out or it will either get empty or gone completely.

I'd be happy to take a trap off your hands if you have an extra you don't mind parting with it. I'm in no hurry - give me a shout if you are able to locate an extra one and let me know what you want for it.

I have the offshore model but use it for flats fishing. I use a zip tie to choke down the inlet so I only get small pins. I have caught over 100 in a single trap before. They will out perform the traditional traps.

I have the inshore model, but it's black. They started using red after I bought mine. Only used it twice, but it works. I bought inshore model so I cod keep it on the boat when needed. Larger would probably better, and read all the tips they have on their website.

We had one stolen when we were staying at Keaton last year. Set it out in front of Cedar Island, in view from our house, at 7pm. At 6 am, it was gone.

We bait with heads and guys from the day before. A lot of fish houses will give you their trash or check the guy barrel at the marina.

I'm going down to the coast one day this next week. I feel sure I have an extra one. I'll take a photo for you!

How long can a trap be left out without checking it?

I've found that frozen cigar minnows or fresh fish carcasses work best. The more bait you put in the trap the better it will work.


I like to soak mine overnight, but have caught 3-4 dozen in just a couple of hours on a good flat.

We usually only put them out over night unless we are fishing a few days.
