Just getting back on the water. Bought a 17ft key west. What's the required safety gear I must carry?

Life jackets for everyone, boat cushion, whistle (or air-horn), flares and fire extinguisher. A paddle is not required on a boat over 16', but it's not a bad idea to carry one.

While I don't see it on that list and it may not be required by law, an anchor and rope with at least 50-100' of rope is requirement in my book. Otherwise, when your engine dies, you are at the mercy of the winds and tides. Neither the winds or the tides have any mercy. Also, try to file a float plan or at least let someone know what general area you will be fishing in.
I also don't like to go without a compass, gps and vhf radio.

I even have back up's for these things. You only die once! I tell folks it is not my responsibility to take anyone fishing but it is my responsibility to bring them all back safe and sound.
