I am looking at 2 different Sea Pro's. One has a Mercury 150 Verado (178 hrs) and the other has a Yamamha 150 (204 hrs). Both are same year model and the Sea Pro with the Mercury is $1500 cheaper. The boats are identical. I have always had a Yamamha with no trouble. Anybody compare the 2 motors?? Thanks!!

There is a reason why the Mercurys are cheaper. Go with the Yamahas!

MERURY STILL MAKES A PRETTY GOOD BLACK ANCHOR, I PREFER OMC PRODUCTS, YAMAHA WOULD PROBLY BE BEST CHOICE.

I would talk them down on the Yamaha! Mercury have a ton of power when running, but yamaha is more dependable.

Used to be correct for engines up to 40 hp several years ago but not anymore. Mercury builds its own now.

They test Mercs on secret lake x, that's so folks can't see them blow up while they are testing them. :-D

They aren't a 100% American company. Mercury Outboards, 30 Hp and less, are made by Tohatsu inJapan. Mercury Marine builds 40, 50 and 60 horsepower outboard motors in Suzhou,China. Mercury also manufactures engines over 75 horsepower in their Fond du Lac, Wisconsin hub in the USA.

I've owned both yamahas and merc's and both were very reliable. Most motors are great motors nowadays, their reliability mostly depends on how they're maintained. All things being equal, I'd go with the yamaha too, but I also race yamaha dirt bikes....hahaha

WHEN MERCURY ENGINES FIRST CAME OUT THEY MADE THE BEST YOU COULD BUY. I BELIEVE THE PARENT COMPANY WAS KEIKIFFER CORP. THEY MADE SMALL ENGINES IN JACKSONVILLE OVER ON PEARL STREET WHERE THE RAILROAD TRACKS CROSSED. THEY ALSO MADE WIZZARD OUTBOARDS FOR WESTERN AUTO, THE SAME AS A MERCURY. I WILL NEVER FORGET, THE FIRST ENGINE I BOUGHT NEW WAS A WIZZARD 12 H.P., I PUT IT ON A SMALL BOAT, THE FIRST BOAT I MADE OUT OF PLYWOOD, AND THAT LITTLE BOAT WOULD JUST FLY WITH THAT 12 HP ENGINE, I PULLED KIDS ON SKII'S WITH THAT LITTLE ENGINE. I USED THAT ENGINE IN SALT WATER AND FRESH, AFTER ABOUT 5 YRS OF FISHING EVERYWHERE I WAS ON ARBUCKLE CREEK BETWEEN AVON PARK AND RD. 98 SOUTH OF LAKE PLACID, I HIT SOMETHING AND THE ENTIRE LOWER HALF OF THE DRIVE JUST FELL OFF. IT HAD CORRODED COMPLETELY IN TWO DIFFERENT PIECES. BACK THEN WE DID NOT HAVE ANY PROTECTION FROM SALT WATER USAGE, MANY OF THE ENGINES BUILT BACK THEN JUST CORRODED IN TOO, ENGINE BLOCKS STILL GOOD BUT THE FOOT ASSEMBLY JUST FELL OFF. I NOW HAVE A 85 HP EVINRUDE THAT HAS ABOUT 5,000 HOURS ON IT , IT IS ALSO A 1985 YEAR MODEL, HAVE NOT HAD ONE MINUTE OF TROUBLE EXCEPT WHEN I HIT ROCKS IN THE RIVERS AND BAYS UP HERE IN N.W. FLA. HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE LOWER UNIT , ONE TIME IN ECONFINA, AND ONE TIME IN AUCILLA.
