Arrived on Friday night and found the campground to be a full house as the warm temps and a break in the rain had everyone itching to get on the water including my wife and myself. A friend was nice enough to have a good fire in the pit and we enjoyed catching up and unwinding.
The plan on Saturday was to get on the water around 8:00 am and fish until 1:00 pm because we had to get back home.
Saturday morn arrived and we launched around 8:30. The low tide that was forecasted was no problem with all the fresh water coming down the river from the record spring rains.
Since the tide was low my first choice was 5 miles SW in 7-8 foot. We started a jig under and cork and a jig without out a cork. After a small rock bass and numerous poor man's tarpon (aka. lady fish) we decided to work our way back north toward double humps stopping in each change in depth. We didn't find any trout using this method so around 9:30 we ran toward rock island. The weather was great but with no wind the water was too slick. The water in that direction was not only stained but had a muddy appearance like you see when someone drags the bottom which could have been a combination of all the fresh water and a ton of boating activity. Needless to say we had no luck to the east and decided to go back west in search of cleaner water and a sea breeze.
Around 11:00 am we finally found cleaner water and started to get a decent breeze from the SW. We begin to pick up some trout in 4-5 foot of water. We were using a popping cork with a new penny/chartreuse gulp with a 2 1/2 foot leader. The fish seemed to prefer an aggressive action with the cork as we caught several while we were moving the cork.
We caught a two person limit of trout had a tremendous day on the water.
I hope everyone had as good of day as we did.
