6/28 Rotary Reef report

Post by tallykenj »

Left Shields at 0730. We stopped be the east sandbar near the birdrack and didn't catch any pinfish. We decided to head toward Rotary Reef and stop by the shoals. About 20 minutes later, we found some very clear water and pinfish. We used these guys, some shrimp and squid along with two chum blocks at the shoals between 9:30 and 13:00. We caught a few small grouper and grunts. Found a lot of nice structure. Attracked some schools of spadfish fish but couldn't land any. I know these are hard to catch but my daughter knows the trick and brought some home in the past. Although we would have been happy with any eatable keeper, we wanted to land a cobia; still haven't caught a keeper. (Last week, we caught one small cobia and grunts near St. Marks reef.) We had some pinfish hanging on the bottom and one under a balloon. The weather was very nice although the breeze died and the heat began kicking up around lunch time.

Up off SC they use cannonball jellyfish to catch spadefish. I've never done it but this article shows how it's done.

jig head with a gulp under a weed line. incredibly fun fight. tossed it back without knowing its worth of table fare.

keep workin' for 'em!
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn. ~Chuck Clark

Wow, thats pretty cool. My dad and I went out to Dog Ballard saturday. There were hundreds of spadfish feeding on top of the wated. My dad hooked one, but we also through it back, not knowing what it was. Now I know!
