Product review Southern Customs rod

Once Kevin's stopped offering an over the counter warrantee on G Loomis and Shimano rods ( no fault of Kevin's, they were no longer allowed to offer the warrantee by the company). I started thinking about what my next rod would be. I am extremely hard on rods, and don't mind spending some coin in a nice rod if I know it will be replaced that day if I break it. Not if it breaks because of a manufacturers defect, but because it broke going into a rod locker or something like that.
I have a bunch of medium light and med action rods ( 8-10 lb braid) but only one med heavy rod ( 20 lb braid) for dock fishing and for mangrove snapper offshore. Last month about 35 miles out I was reeling in a nice mangrove snapper and a Goliath came out and ate him. Somehow my rod slipped out of my hands and went 70' down:(. It was a gl3 7' med heavy fast action rod. I really liked it, and had it for 7 years, but being my only MH it needed to be replaced.
When it came time to replace it, I had my mind made up I couldn't spend $250 for a rod that if broken, would have to be mailed back to the company, for them to decide weather or not it is a manufacturers defect and weather or not they would replace it. Or would they say " it's not a defect, You can replace it for $150".?
Then I remembered a post by Dom Bernardoni saying he was starting a production line that would offer an over the counter no questions asked warrantee for his rods. The price was $180 ($160 for BBF members) and all rods are made in the USA. I also like the idea of supporting a local ( s Ga) guy trying to start something that to a large Japanese company.
I called Dom, and his production line won't be ready until spring. Also the rod I wanted replaced was a little heavier than what he was making in his inshore line. He said for the same price he would build me exactly what I wanted. Because it is custom, here isn't an over the counter warrantee, but he said he would build me another at no cost if it broke for any reason. So that is why I went with this rod over a Loomis, st croix, shimano, etc. so I called him up, explained what I wanted and we started the process of getting me exactly what I wanted. About 2 weeks later I was driving to Thomasville to meet him to pick it up.
The rod review, It is a 6'10" med heavy fast action spinning rod. It has a small forgrip( something new to me, so I can keep a finger tip on the blank, not on the cork). He cut the treads down so there are less plastic threads in you hand. It also has semi micro guides( another first for me). The blank is very responsive and loads very well. I can cast a weedless jerk bait much farther than I could with my GL3. The finish is as good or better than any production rod on the market. I really like the guides, I didn't have one wind knot all day. I think( imho) this is as good as any under $300 rod on the market. It also seems to have good mojo, caught 4 midslot reds on the first trip. Forgot to mention, it looks awesome!!!

The orange and blue was my choice ( don't worry the production rods will be all black)

Southern Customs will get all of my rod business going forward. Hopefully they will be in local stores in the spring, but if you can't wait, call Dom and he'll get you fixed up w a custom for the same price

Nice looking rod. Glad you're happy with the chosen replacement.

I actually have a mh gl3 pending warranty service right now as well. Hopefully it will be replaced. Reality is, if you have a receipt from when the lifetime warranty was in place then g loomis cannot deny coverage. Just so happens I have a former products liability litigator on staff. Maybe we should find some others and create a class.

If a g loomis rep reads this, understand what this policy change is doing to your loyal customer base. It is in your best interest from a business and legal perspective to replace these rods. Lynn, feel free to share with your loomis rep:)

Brian, from what I've been told, Loomis never really offered an over the counter warrantee, it was something Kevin's did as a service. But people started taking advantage so they had to stop. Saving a receipt is something I rarely do, and liked the previous no questions asked policy. Lin and miles know me and probably sold me the rod, so I never had to have a receipt when replacing a rod. So needless to say, I don't have a receipt for my other 4 Loomis rods, so if they break am I out if luck?
The main reason I switched was the warrantee, but I'll stay because of the quality. I also prefer to spend my money wih " the little guy". Hope to have Lin a demo rod soon.

Dom lives in Albany, thomasville was about half way for both of us. I believe the production rods will be made in S Carolina, but not sure about that.

Thanks for the review. I sure like the sound of the warrenty. I just can't afford to drop $160 for a rod :(

With a lifetime warrantee, it's the last one you will ever buy( unless you let a Goliath stealit from you). You can't afford NOT to buy one  . :D

A lot of the higher end rods have serial numbers and you can register them with the mfg. so that may help with warranty issues if you registered them when you made the purchase.

One thing I do from both a warranty and insurance perspective is scan receipts into my PC as soon as I can after purchase, including any boating equipment/accessories etc. I also download any manuals etc. that are available because you know you probably will not be able to find the paper one later. Don't have to worry about trying to track them down later and if you ever have a theft, sinking or fire loss it will make your life a whole lot easier...

Note: It works out well unless your wife takes a look at your PC files so you might want to password protect that folder  (I don't have that problem as long as she gets her own new rod/reel/lure to go along with mine)

I don't know where numbers are on those rods, I'll look. But I like the old system where the GLoomis or the Shimano written on the blank was enough.
