I was getting excited to see the water temps dropping, the tide times and preferable solunar index for last Thurs and Fri. Everything seemed to be lining up, including the weather. I decided to take a few days off from work and spend the time fishing. I started off on Thurs heading east into a headwind. The plan was to check some structure five miles offshore but the wind created too much of a chop. I abandoned my plan at the buoy line and decided to poke into the rock garden and set up a drift. The water was calmer and clear. My two buddies and I used shrimp, squid, mullet, pinfish and artificials. We had it all covered. Although we found a lot of pinfish, we couldn't find anything else. The pins were at every spot. Our depths ranged from 4' to 6'. We observed a few other boats moving around trying to find some fish and it seemed we shared the same frustration.
As the wind died down, we decided to head south to some structure. Not the same as the initial plan but I was sure it would produce some black bass for my two friends. Sure enough, those little guys were home and attaching non-stop. Too bad none were over 10". We ran back to the east flats and tried for trout again. No luck. Before heading in, we fished a shoal and managed to find a flounder that was lost as it approached the boat. At around high tide, close to 3:00, we decided to call it a day.
I was determined not to give up and returned alone Friday. The tide was low in the morning so I decided to poke around some oyster bars in the river as I headed south. I tried about five or six different bars and didn't have any luck. I was hoping to find a red. As the tide moved in, I decided to work the shoreline on the way to a creek mouth that has produced flounder and reds in the past. No luck there either. As I was at the mouth, I figured I'd ride the current up the creek for recon mission. It sure was pretty up there. I had never been so far up in the creek before. I saw mullet swimming everywhere; none were jumping. I found a nice pocket where I was able to get the iPilot to hold a spot without being effected by the strong incoming current. The weather and the area were gorgeous. Again, however, no fish. Crazy, I thought. Where in the hell are the fish? I gave up on the creek and left before the tide pulled too much water out. Before calling it a day, I spent some time in 2' - 3' and found some 12"- 14" trout. I was happy to bring a few onboard (and throw them back).
O'well. Any day (especially two in a row) on the water is a good day. I sure do love getting on the water; fish or no fish. I know times are a changing and the fish will soon arrive. I can't wait!
