Well, we took 2 days to try Keaton and here's the report, such as it is. First day, launched about 1 pm to fish rising tide all afternoon. Went to first spot and got 3 barely short trout, lots of bait and small BSB. This was 4-5 ft., decided to go deeper and went to 7 ft. in a crab trap line. Wife got a just barely keeper, thought they might turn on but that was our last trout. Fished til 5 PM all over in from 2 ft. to 7 ft. and threw the entire tackle box at them but just got no trout bites. Dragged live shrimp and small pins and only got small BSB. At one point we went right up on the grassline on shore and pitched topwater and catch 2000. Nothing. Saw mullet jumping on the grass and all kinds of bait(schools of minnows, pilchards, or something everywhere). Water was 80 degrees at the grass and 76 on the flats. Gave up about 5 and went next morning. Day 2: Launched at 9 AM(had to wait out the thick fog) and went South instead of North like the day before. Again, fished all depths and all kinds of baits but very little to show. Went out to 10 ft. and got into school of big Spanish. Wife foul-hooked first one in rt. shoulder and fought it to boat so I could net it. A few miutes later, same thing. Hung in rt. shoulder again and same size. Got it in and measured, both were 20.5 at fork. I caught a smaller Spanish and a big jolthead and tons of little BSB. No trout at all today. Quit at 2 pm and headed in, blistered and tired. It got really hot, nice breeze both days. Ended with 1 trout, 3 Spanish, 1 BSB, a big spottail pin, and nice jolthead. Not like we wanted, but enough for a small fry. Got checked by the man out there and everything was OK. Nice pair of guys. Asked them about fishing and they said it has been better further north lately. Suggested Spring Warrior but we really didn't feel like the long ride up that way, it was already hot. It was a good 2 days with the wife, stayed in Perry at Days Inn 2 nights. Got ready to leave this morning and noticed some no-good SOB stole 6 of our rods from the boat, 4 casting rigs and both our small rigs for catching bait.
He left the most expensive and newer rigs in the boat and didn't get any on the tackle boxes, must have been in a hurry. Reported it to Taylor County S.O. and he wrote it up. We'll see, meanwhile we will try to replace the rigs. I already found 2 good ones at the house we can use, so it's not too bad. Just makes me mad, that's all. If anybody goes, I hope yall have better luck. It is tough!
Floating grass was terrible both days, water very clear except near shore.
