7/19 went skiing.. sort of

Post by DKwakulla »

I finally managed to get myself out of bed before sunrise and go fishing. Took the yak to SP. No keepers but what a ride..

I was fishing the ledge next to the third set of channel markers going out with fishbites on a jig head. Bait EVERYWHERE. Clean water too. after quite a bit of bump bump bump.. I caught two trout back to back but 14". I cast again feel a bump and WHHHIIIIIIZZZZZZ. 15 minutes and after being dragged halfway back to the big oyster bar Im in close contact with a Ray that was easily 4 feet wide. Frankly I was too busy shitting myself to take a picture once I figured out what it was. No plans on pulling a Steve Irwin, so I cut the line.

Fished the bar some caught probably 10 snot cats. I was using a 2 hook flounder rig with fishbites and had three double hookups all catfish. I may or may not have taken out some frustration on one of them with a Ka Bar. Caught one tiny flounder on the way in but dropped him while trying to measure.

All in all fun day. Glad to see the gulf is finally looking like itself after everything being so awful the last couple of months.

Better than my day ;-)
And smart move to cut the line on the stingray!
Switch to plastics and your catfish catch will go down!

Cajun sleighride. :-)
To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.

Funny all I could catch with Fishbites was trout when I tried it. Never caught anything with Gulp. Never had faith with jigs/plastics enough to commit a day of fishing to try it. At this point I've caught more with my Chartreuse AD spoon than any variety of Gulp I've tried; even more with a Chartreuse Super Spook Jr. I'm about to abandon Gulp and go back to the cast net. I've had success tipping my AF spoon with Fishbites more than Gulp.
