Dark water

I have a question. Why is the water around Keaton so dark right now? Have they gotten that much rain this summer? Me and wife went to the beach there just to relax. Noted it was very dark, walking knee-deep could hardly see bottom. And also noted water has brackish taste, not real salty like normal. I have not fished in a while or been to the gulf beaches, and it just seemed strange to me. The 200+ boats going scalloping was impressive, boats were coming and going as long as we stayed. The road was backed up with trailers from the beach to the store. I hope they had good luck.
