Wind...wind...and more wind. Got to the ramp @0730. Water a little choppy there. As we progressed down the river...got chopper. By the time we got to the island it was very choppy. Mouth of the river was rolling....and rough. Turned left toward Econfina and went about a mile..in 3-4 feet of water. Tried jigs...no luck...CT with jigs underneath....promptly got a nice 18 in keeper. Partner shortly got a 16 incher..on CT ..encouraging. Little known to me....that would be my last bite of the day......but there was excitement near.
Went out a mile or so....rough all the way...and simply got wet for the effort. Decided closer in was where the fish were...since they weren't outside.
While about 500 yds from shore...in 3 feet (high tide)...with a Catch 2000..black and orange belly...my buddy hung into the largest trout I have probably ever seen. I first saw him (the fish) with his gills flared out...head out of the water...shaking it like a bass. The hit was near the boat..at the head of the boat. I couldn't get the net (it was too small anyway..and it's a bigun) to the fish. My buddy managed to get him around the boat...back by the console...but I couldn't reach him. As he went down...much line was taken....and the hooks came out....and...the fight was over.
I caught a 5 pounder earlier in the year. This fish looked like he was almost twice as large....estimated...and I got several good visuals..8-9 pounds. Big...big..big. But he got away. Isn't it funny how the big one always gets away.
Wind continued to build and by noon whitecaps were everywhere. Came in about 2pm and it was even whitecapping at the ramp.
