I just installed one of these things on Hard Times IV tonight and was wondering if anyone has used one before.

I did read the following post but couldn't determine if anyone has used one of these before.

My skeg on my Merc 50 is only about 1/2 in tact and has only been in the saltwater about 5 times now. Knock on wood, I've not hit any rocks or oyster beds, but have buried up on the sand once or twice. Anyway, it installed very easy and sure look pretty!

Maybe only time will tell.

What I recall about the skeggard is that it was designed to fall off on impact. To help take the blow......I found out the skeg replacement cost a little more. So I just replaced the skeg....And the replacement skeg was much stronger than the first replacement skeg...or either Spring Creek bars are not near as hard as Econfina rocks.....

I put a Mac's River Runner on the motor on my skiff when it was brand new last month, have never hit a rock but have walloped a bar pretty good and expierienced very minor damage to prop. None to foot or skeg. I was worried about the the change in motor performance when I installed it but I didn't notice any. It's a pretty nice design from all that I researched.

I've been running one now for years on my inshore boat and believe me its worth it, i have had 2 props re-done thanks to the ( Econfina rocks ) but skeg is still brand new, for sure it keeps it from chipping and breaking up, chunks missing , u know the type. Its a great addition to your boat, u will be happy... frank

Dale, how bout a follow-up report on the Skeggard you installed.

Skekkgard appeared to work as it was designed. I did scrap some sand this past weekend. Without it, I'm sure that I would have boiled up some more sand and maybe a rock.

There are no performance issues with it, with no difference in steering. I didn't install it perfectly straight; however, it doesn't affect performance as far as I can tell. I was still able to trim up with 2 grown adults and the Merc 50 (16' Aluminum Bass Tracker) and reach 31 mph.

I'm going to order some additionally bolts from the company as they recommend, as they are designed to sheer off if you hit a rock very hard at a high rate of speed. My thoughts are if you hit a rock and it gets knocked off, you would be in shallow enough water to see it to go back and retreive it.

Took only about 10 minutes to install, held on by 2 bolts that you have to drill 2 holes through your existing (or what's left) skeg.

By the way, it sure looks pretty being stainless, with my stainless prop. Even if I had a new boat and motor, I would probably go ahead and get one as I can see how it would protect a new motor.

As you will see, I didn't get it perfectly straight as I installed it while the motor was backed up in the garage, next to the wall , I was real bummed out; however, it seems to perform well. I guess the real proof in the pudding will be when I head over to the rock garden at St Marks or up Stoney Bayou.

I've heard that Chalk is reall good at testing out skegs, and he's gifted at finding rocks. Maybe I'll invite him along sometime if I'm feeling like doing a real test?

I can attest to that fact Dale. Was with him at Econfina once when he knocked one off. Then lost the Motor Toter the same trip. I think that was the trip that I caught the thirty......well never mind, we won't bring that up again.
