Had another great day spearfishing. Shot a weird looking grouper. Under the ledge it looked like a Black. Looking at the internet, we guessed its a Leopard Grouper. Not to supposed to be in the Northern Gulf.

Unusual here for sure. How deep if you don't mind? ( a range will do, I'm not looking for your spot )

I think that's a juvenile Goliath Grouper.

I think its a strangely colored black. Positive its not a goliath. I have seen some blacks in pictures with these colorations and yellow spots. I guess they are more brightly colored in some fish.

Looks like a true black. They can have those orange spots and are shaped like a gag. also fin edges are black. Its not a juvenile jewfish!!!! the Hershey bar rectangle pattern common to black may be affected by contact with ice or lack thereof.... nice fish

I'm with boom, that is a black grouper. We shoot them in the keys. They do not have the pattern on them that is shown in the id charts.
