Broken Gamakatsu hook...

This is the 2nd hook from this package that has broken...
Looks like it is at the same place the barb is cut in.
I'm surprised that a 7/0 hook would break on snapper
Anyone else had issues with Gamakatsu hooks?

Yes I have. That is exactly what the hook looked like that I caught the tarpon on. When we pulled the hook we were shocked to see no barb. Don't know how old it was, it was on my BIL rig.
I had some break on redfish a few years back, but that was on me. I think they had gotten wet in my box.

We have broken several on my boat mostly while removing the hook after the fish is boated.

Interesting, I've never broken a gamakatsu, I've broken owners and bass pro brand hooks. But, I use Trokars now anyway for the welded eyes.

I use the 4/0 EWG offset worm hook and have many break.
But I still like and use the Gamakatsu brand.

Why do you use them if they break Mr Steve? There are plenty of hooks that don't have that problem or the horrible reputation for breaking.

LOL, Made in Japan, assembled in Thailand?
Just what assembly is required for a hook?
On a similar note, I dumped a brand new pack of 1/4 oz jugheads into the tackle box and when I started using them, noticed there was almost no barb on them.
I guess quality is a thing of the past.....

I broke several gamakatsu hooks bottom fishing. After about 3 broken (not all from the same pack) I quit using them. This was grouper fishing. Snapper fishing has not been as tough on hooks for me. I often use much less sturdy hooks for snapper and have had no problems. VMC hooks have been bulletproof for us with the grouper, btw. I've learned the hard way to be gentle pulling hooks out of a fish with pliers. The vast majority of the hooks I've broken in my life were pulled out with pliers previous to breaking.

I have also experienced a straightened/broken Gamakatsu while bottom fishing offshore. This was a few years ago.

Yeah, I was hooked on gamakatsu offset-shank worm hooks for years bass fishing. So naturally I bought a 50-pack of gamakatsu circle hooks for grouper. Fail, fail, fail. Anybody want to buy a pack of 47?

I used 8/0 octopus hooks for years with very few problems. Maybe coming from China now!

I have tried other similar hooks and not been happy how they fish for me.
I have only broken one with a fish in the water.
All the others have broken while removing the hook from the fish.
All have broken in the same place, about half way down the shank.
