Beating the heat…Frog Gigging. 6/10
Posted: June 13th, 2016, 9:59 pm
This past Friday my 15 yr old daughter & I were fortunate enough to have a good friend named Winfield who took us frog gigging on one of his local lakes. Winfield is active in a Youth Hunting program with the Gainesville Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), the Gator Gobblers and this was an auctioned trip at their 2016 banquet. Both of my kids have participated in this great youth hunting program in both deer & turkey hunting and we’ve made some great friends along the way!

Gainesville Gator Gobblers
Back in 2006 when I had access to a Go-Devil mud motor rig I’d taken my then younger son Casey frog gigging before but this would be Kaitlyn’s first time chasing frogs.

Back in 2006…….Casey (left) and his buddy Mathew
Now it’s Kaitlyn’s turn and we’ve been looking forward to this for months…..
However there was a bad storm pushing through so we waited a couple of hours till 11 pm when it passed leaving cool temps and few bugs (!!).

Bad storm pushing through

Poor shot of Winfield’s gigging platform; a 23 HP longtail mud motor

Working some edges

Kaitlyn’s first frog

Another

I even got one…

Chute bound

Not all were captured……

As the night went on……we enjoyed a frogfest

Winfield was a one-handed gigging machine even while running the longtail!! He rarely missed.

The croaker sack is looking good…..
A little after 3 am Kaitlyn faded and we left the water shortly after. We’d clean them in the morning…...
Saturday morning:

A good looking pig frog

Winfield gave Kaitlyn a quick Frog Cleaning 101.
(this may not have been the most pleasant task for Kaitlyn but she was a trooper till they were all cleaned)

“pulling their pants down”

That was a fun way to get out of Florida’s heat and enjoy a not-so-common-anymore outdoor adventure!
Thanks a TON Winfield!!
Hoo Yah!!
