Lanark

Hey guys, I think I'm gonna try fishing around the Lanark area next weekend and was just wandering if anybody had any suggestions on which boat ramp to use. I've been researching maps and charts and it seems thst the area between Lanark reef and the mainland can be shallow at times so not sure if If I need to use a ramp in Carrabelle or if the Lanark boat club ramp is a good option. This is gonna be a maiden voyage so ideas are greatly appreciAted!

I have a 22" boat and use the Lanark ramp. You can get out at a pretty low tide. The e ne wind is terrible for that area. Looks breezy, but I understand having a new boat. Good luck

I also have a 22' Bay boat and it's usually good. It's fine anytime if you go out and go west to cut next to the Lanark Reef. Going east (left) from the ramp is also normally good though you need to watch your depth machine and look at your GPS if you have a depth chart.

Alright. Next question. Where in the Lanark area do I grab bait. Aside from using gulp and hopefully grabbing some pilchards with a cast net?

The gas station before Ho Hum sells live shrimp and bull minnows last I checked.

A small rig with a bream bobber, small split shot, and #6 hook will catch pinfish with gulp or shrimp chunks.

Also bottom is grassy and muddy, pretty safe to throw a net.

Lanark is a fine place to launch if you have a bit of common sense and some local knowledge. At mid to high tide you have to work to find something to run into. Low tide is a different animal. Fall/winter low tides require precise navigation. From my patio I can see the unfortunate few who miscalculate while trying to run out the little pass to deep water. I check on them from time to time as they wait a few hours for the tide to come in. They don't look happy standing in that ankle deep water right next to the channel.

Rockyg, are you talking about the little cut/pass that is to the west of the Lanark ramp? Almost at the western most aspect of the Lanark reef. If I knew how to post pics if post a screen shot of where I'm talking about. Is it safer to just run east around the end of Lanark reef until I get to kkow the area better.

No.....there is a marked channel about 3/4 of a mile West of the Ramp. When you are at the ramp paying your launch fee look for a very detailed sign/map that will show you what you need to know. As you leave the ramp and run West there is a small hard to see buoy that you should run to the North of and then immediately turn South and run between the two large poles that mark the channel thru the reef. It's tricky right there as the bar extends into the channel some and you have to stay RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE.

Running East out of the ramp is no problem from mid to high, but skinny at lower tides. That's also the large grass flats area and plowing thru there killing the grass is frowned upon.
