It runs fine unless it has been at trolling speed for any significant length of time. When you gun it after trolling for a while, it does not shut off but it bucks and jumps, revs up, then down, and finally settles down and gets going like it should. What could be the causes. It does not do it unless it has been at trolling speed for awhile before gunning it.

My old Johnson 2-stroke does like that, usually when it's sat a while or just been idling like when trolling. I run sea-foam in mine, your low speed and idle jets may be getting clogged. Or filters like the other guy said.

Yamaha recommends their ring free product, but I also used sea foam on mine when I had one. Could be a filter, clogged jet or if you are lucky like me, a leaking seal on the O2 sensor.

Large complicated outboards are not good candidates for handy homeowner repairs. Pete at Sunshine Boats has decades of Yamaha training and experience. He can fix it.....you just take a deep breath and write the check.

Thanks for the responses. Upon consideration, and with there being multiple potential causes, I decided to drop it off and have the pros diagnose it.
