Put in at the light house Sat. morning about 7:00 a.m. Ran west over to Pattys Island. Set up a drift to the SW and started picking up short trout almost immediately.
My fishing partner's 1st cast backlashed, so as he was picking out his tangled line, his gold Cotton Cordell was lying in the water about 10' from the boat. As he was about to finish up and reel in the slack, a real nice redfish grabbed the lure. In the excitement he forgot to give the fish a few seconds to really get the bait in his mouth. As he set the hook, he pulled it away from the fish. Just as quickly as it had all happened it was over.
Continued to drift, picking up more shorts and a keeper here and there. We had a awesome Tarpon put on an acrobatic show about a 100 yrds away. Finally, the high tide lull set in and it was getting hot. So we motor around for awhile cooling off.
After 45 mins. or so, we set up a SW drift out in front of the lighthouse. Picked up more shorts and a few more keepers. The wind began to pick up and we started a more northerly drift back towards the lighthouse. Caught more shorts and couple more keeper trout. Hit another lull around 12:30 and decided to call it a day to get a head start on the afternoon thunderstorms.
Total for the day:
9 keeper trout (16"-19")
around 30 short trout
4 hardheads
3 ladyfish
Caught trout in 2.5 to 5 feet of water on dead shrimp, shiner tails, and SWA grubs (color Glow) all under a c/t cork, Mirrolures' topdog (green and silver), and a gold Cotton Cordell. There were a lot of shorts over around Patty's Island. Topwater seemed to work better out in front of the lighthouse.
It was a beautiful morning on the water, though a little hot until the breeze picked up. We had all our equipment washed down by torrential thunderstorms as we drove 10 mph up hwy. 319 back to Beachton, GA.
Great day. Can't wait until next time.
