I'm in that scenario on a regular basis. I don't wear sandals, and I don't gently ask the cottonmouth to play nice. I back up as if my existence depends on avoiding a snake bite. Hope this nature boy has life insurance.

I hunted and collected snakes including poisonous ones for many years in my younger and faster days-and I would have been able to do this if I needed to-but I have not found a need to do so,-play with poisonous snakes at your peril.
