Triple Tail- a new addiction!

It was my buddy Magnus's birthday and we wanted to try something new.
I have never specifically targeted Triple tail and the experience did not disappoint.
Magnus, Matt and I met up with Chris Gouras,Triple Tail guide extraordinaire ;-)

Chris is a Triple tail addict and an expert! He is also a great teacher. I enjoyed his coaching as much as the fishing.

We headed out with calm seas-

We started with some practice casting.
Lesson #1- If you are not right on the buoy you don't catch a fish!

We fished circle hooks under a slip bobber with a variety of baits.

It didn't take long too hook up Matt with his first fish

Lesson #2 Get the away from the structure fast- they will wrap you up in a heart beat!
Magnus with a nice one...

Lesson #3 a lot of times they don't know they are hooked until they see the boat. Then, like a cobia, they go nuts!

If the fish were over 20" and not gut hooked we tagged and released them

We all caught nice fish...

Took home our limit and tagged six others- 14.75", 17", 23", 23.5", 24" and a 25.5"
Should have landed another half dozen that came unpinned.
Just an amazing fish!

Lesson #4 - You will never eat a better tasting fish.
We Panko breaded and pan fried the cheeks in butter for a appetizer.
Then Pan seared fillets in butter and served it with two different sauces.
An shaved onion, lemon juice, and parsley or a lemon butter cream.
Both were excellent. I don't think I have ever had a butterier fish.

I can recommend Chris without hesitation.
He is a patient and excellent teacher with years of knowledge chasing this unique fish!
If you contact Chris please tell him you saw this post! His website is here http://tidecreekcharters.com/

ALSO - FWC is considering making Triple Tale a game fish- like Trout and Redfish.
Right now they are being commercially harvested with little regard for breading fish.
While I want the commercial guys to be able to make a living, I believe this fish is a treasure and should be protected.
If you agree please go to the FWC link below and comment.

Sounds like a fun trip. Commendable that the extras/oversize were tagged and released. Thanks for posting.

My article on MS Sound tripletail (all one word), is in the latest issue of SWS. The guy I fished with there uses an adjustable float rig with consistent success on big fish.

Tripletail are a very cool, mysterious species and you're right--they're extremely tasty too!

That's awesome, good for y'all. That's a strong day. Thanks for posting. How deep were they? What bait worked the best? Guessing y'all were live baiting since you were using corks. Good work

5 - 10 feet and the bait mattered less than presentation. If you were 2 feed off the buoy you didn't get a hit.
Heck they would come up and try to eat the cork!

Now that's a face I haven't seen in a while. Great report and glad you were able to get Magnus on some fish. He's a fun guy to be around.
