we stopped at this campground on the way just to look. would stay for a while if we were rv-ing. Suspect they have good pics on the web, I just got signs to remind me where it is!

I'm pretty sure this isn't on the way for you, but the Devil's Tower Ntl Park campground as well as the KOA right outside the park are very very nice campgrounds. I was there early October last year. The last weekend they were open I think. Started snowing while we were there and there weren't a whole lot of people there that time of year. Very quiet, very pretty and lots of wildlife.
