SPEAK OUT FOR BETTER RED SNAPPER MANAGEMENT Thanks to a landmark agreement between the Gulf of Mexico states and the federal government in 2017, recreational fishermen had responsible access to red snapper in federal waters for the first time in many years. But that was only a temporary fix.

Fortunately, each of the five Gulf states has offered proposals that would allow them to manage the Gulf red snapper recreational fishery in 2018 and 2019 to fit their unique needs.

Collectively these proposals, known as Exempted Fishing Permits (EFPs), will maximize fishing flexibility and improve data collection while adhering to prescribed conservation quotas. Given the expertise the Gulf States have shown in managing their fisheries, anglers have every reason to expect great things.

Right now, anglers have the opportunity to weigh in on these proposed EFPs. Send a message today in support of the state EFPs for red snapper.

Sure, and I was glad for the state management options. However, if and until the quotas are adjusted to reflect a different philosophy commercials and their allies the grouper/Snapper guide boats will still command a huge part of the harvest. Until that changes nothing changes, except temporarily. Just running around inside of the same recreational harvest % is a false hope, and beating up on NMFS data is entertaining but not productive in the long run.
Regular individuals that would like to harvest their own fish are still screwed unless the commercial allocation is changed.

Until the powers that be make the major spawning season a no take season there will never be a change.The head boats,charter guys and especially the heavy commercial guys know when and where and consistantly use this to obliterate the spawn size fish with no care foe tomorrow or anyone else.The fact is the sport fisherman has proven to be a bigger financial impact on the economy than any commercial endeavor.
