Well, I'm going to give the ol' poon a go this weekend. It will be my first time consciously attempting to catch a Tarpon. I got my spot, and a baitrunner 6500 with 270 yards of 20 lb test Ande mono (6' of 60lb leader)... now I'm wondering if I should go with 30lb test or even greater?

Any tips? Thanks...

Granted I'm no expert, but if I was you I'd go to at least 40lb test, and 80lb leader. Gives you a better chance at the big ones...

I just don't think we got very many experts on Tarpon fishin on here and ya gotta give yer thread a bump back up to the top every now and then ta get someones attention

No worries... just proving (to myself) how bored I can get at work! Hit Mud Cove with 12 pinfish on Sunday... not much baitfish around... First one on was a 6 footer... it jumped about 4 feet out of the water... weird thing was, when I finally pulled it to the boat it had rows of sharp teeth and a black tipped fin...

anyways not much baitfish out there, no tarpon, but plenty of 4-6 foot jumping sharks and saw a couple of huge manta rays too...

You won't find me doing much swimming or wading around Alligator point... 8)

Looking around the Panhandle Forums, I haven't seen many Tarpon reports this year.
I'm not sure whether people are being secretive, or its not been a very prolific year. :-?

Don't think it's from lack of fish. As you can read from my post back several weeks my son was doing well jumping them just couldn't put one close enough to touch the leader. I don't think we have many forum members that target just tarpon or maybe there's a seceret hanshake

This is the usual handshake I get from Tarpon fishers :smt042

Two years ago, I went to Belize for some fishing, snorkeling, and rum sampling. The fishing guide that I had the most success with rigged large Penn spinning reels (I do not remember model numbers) with 25# test, a short wire leader, and a small (4/0, I think) hook. His theory is that the smaller hooks will find a crevice in the 'poons mouth. On that one day I hooked 8 and landed 4. And then I sampled a bunch of rum.

So you're saying that if I really want to catch some Tarpon, go to Belize and get loaded!!! Now there's a 'poon fishin' tip I'd like to try out... :-D 8) Cheers!
