What are the advantages/disadvantages of an internal vs external antenna on a GPS unit?

Supposedly if you have in the area of alot of metal, like T-tops and such, and even a hard top you could have diminished performance, so you go with an external. Nowadays most people find that the internal works just as well. I have an external, but it is a litlle older GPS.

If you have a hard top or t top on a boat they can sometimes interfere with reception on models with internal antennas. External antennas can be located in a remote location free of overhead obstructions.

For a boat with no tops (includes bimini tops) an internal model works just fine.

What tom and Don ( :o ) said. If you don't have a hard top go with the internal. It's one less thing to get in the way.
