Anyone know of a good one? I'm in need of another nerve block or surgery probably. I've had 8 or 10 extruded discs over a couple decades and I'm in a bad spot again.

Can't recommend a back doctor, but Dr. Gene Jenkins (Chiropractor) has done wonders for me. Very good friend of mine was scheduled for a back surgery that would have put him out of work for 6 months for recovery.

Went to a chiropractor, discovered his hips were out of alignment and within two adjustments was back to his old self.

My Dad had a very invasive surgery scheduled and took a chance on a chiropractor and acupuncturist and saved himself a ton of recovery that likely would not have solved the problem.

Of course, sometimes surgery is required, but if you haven't at least tried the less invasive treatments I would give it a go.

If you are going the surgical route, check to see if you're insurance company does a program like surgery plus that will help you find a specialist and potentially save you money.

I sat in on a presentation a couple years ago analyzing knee surgeons provided by Florida Blue Cross as options for surgeons. I can't remember the exact numbers, but a huge chunk were not board certified (they received specialized training for that surgery) and a bunch did less than 5 knee surgeries per year (there's a STRONG correlation between the number of a specific surgeries a physician does and success rates).

Look for a surgeon who does that specific surgery a LOT, even if it means traveling. Surgeries are very complex, and you want someone who does that specific surgery a lot.

Also, if you are paying out of pocket, avoid getting the surgery at a hospital, as that will increase the costs quite a bit for little discernable benefit.

If you happen to work for the state, look into surgery plus.

Thanks a ton for the info. I had a chiropractor for ten years or so. She was kind enough to let me know when she was no longer able to help and referred me to a pain management specialist. They referred me for the multiple nerve blocks I've had in the past. They are in Birmingham, AL. And I'm in Tallahassee for at least a year - not interested in travelling that far for treatment.

If you find that surgery is needed, I would recommend Dr. Albert Lee of Tallahassee Neurological Clinic. He is very competent and has the highest success rate and confidence among heath care workers in the area. Also, and this is important, if he feels surgery is not needed or beneficial he will tell you that up front. He is not "cut happy".

Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic has a pain management department and spine surgeons.

I know several people that have had great success with Dr. Albert Lee as well.

I had back surgery on a couple blown disks about 10 years ago. No problems since but I know several people where the pain continued. My only advice is to do your own research and not just rely on someone opinion. Most of them can perform a successful surgery but I want the doctor that has the highest success rate. Just my two cents and good luck!

Here is the doctor that did mine a few years ago. He came highly recommended.

He is/was on an approved list of doctors that could operate on the POTUS.
