Just an FYI, all the trout we caught Sunday had worms. We didn’t bother to keep a single fish today. Have others noticed the same thing?

Pretty common. Extra protein, not harmful except the ick factor.

I had no idea. We usually do catch and release. Maybe once or twice a year we actually keep the fish. This was the first time they seemed to be full of them.

I like to catch & cook worms from Apalachee Bay. Mostly I find them in seatrout. I just eat the trout along with the worms.

Usually worse in spring and summer. It’s a shark tapeworm that uses the shrimp then the trout that eats the shrimp as intermediate hosts. Harmless to humans and already stayed. Easily removed if you don’t like the idea of eating them.

How can you tell if they have worms without cleaning them?

We kept the ones on Sunday and cut into them. That’s why we didn’t bother to keep them on Monday.

I read that shrimp were the intermediate hosts between tapeworm egg and trout( shrimp eats egg, trout eats shrimp) then trout between shrimp and shark ( final host). I don’t remember the source, but it seemed reputable when I read it. I don’t know for sure obviously, but that’s what I read. Do you have a source?

SG, I found a youtube video by "fishyourassoff.com" that described the full worm life cycle of shark/shrimp (or baitfish)/trout/back to shark. No scientific references, but the description does follow well-documented parasitic worm life cycles. Maybe this is similar to what you read.
