Avoiding Amberjack

We are headed out to a live bottom area off Steinhatchee for the last day of Gag Grouper season. This particular spot is always LOADED with big AJs, which love live pin fish just like the gag grouper, but the season will be closed. In the past even when we try fishing right on the bottom we still have trouble getting away from the AJs.

Any rigging ideas or other tips that would reduce the AJ bites? I don't mind catching them but they will wear your arms out trying to get through them and into the gags.

Usually AJ's are mid to high in the water column. Put a heavy weight ( 8oz ) and get your bait to the bottom quickly.

We've done that and get to the bottom just fine but the AJs are still eating it on the bottom. Was thinking a knocker rig or going toward dead bait would be a better option but I know the gags really love pinfish,
