KEATON BEACH, Fla. (WTXL) — A juvenile was transported to a Tallahassee hospital Thursday following a shark attack.

According to the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, it along with the Taylor County Fire and Rescue, assisted a juvenile who was bitten by a shark while scalloping near Grassy Island in water approximately five feet deep.

The sheriff's office added the type of shark was not determined, but the length of the shark was around nine feet in length.

The sheriff's office says a family member jumped in the water and beat the shark until the juvenile was freed.

The juvenile was airlifted to the hospital with serious injuries.

Damn, as a parent that's worst nightmare material right there. Hope the kiddo pulls through and recovers.

Scary and sad for sure. Does anyone know what the water clarity was like yesterday? You think most of these attacks are stupid juvi sharks mistaking a persons hand for a fish. But 9’ shark should know the difference. Pulling for the young lady

According to other reports, the young woman lost her leg as a result of the attack. Very sad turn of events, but if you are in their element...

I saw a video someone took in the same area a few days before the attack. It was a 8-9' bull shark, and the water is clear. Last I read was she still has her leg, but she is critical.

She's awake and in good spirits according to Facebook, the leg is questionable.

My boat was 40 yards from her and we were all in the water when it happened. Had no idea until we heard the screams, thought someone got hit by another boat. Talked with people next to hear and found out it was a shark and started warning the other boats after the shark was spotted again. Water was pretty clear and only about 5 ft deep. Didn't scallop there the rest of the weekend.

She's up and walking today, so she's at least on the road to recovery after the amputation.
