Hit the water about 8:00 this morning with the wife in tow. Spanish were putting on a show all day chasing bait fish. Caught a few of those then passed the pole to the wife. Wife isn't exactly a fisherman. Her grand total catch to date was two bluegill. Stuck her in the middle of the Spanish to see if I could get her excited. She landed two nice spanish and a ladyfish. She threw out again and something starting burning up the drag and about sent her overboard. Luckily she did hand on the the rod. Freaked her out a little and she "forced" ;-) me to take the pole. By that time, whatever it was had spooled the reel. So, I grabbed then line with my hand and hoped it didn't snap. It didn't...Ended up fighting the fish on light tackle for about 15 minutes before getting it to the boat. Now here's the best part...I have no idea what it was. The thing fought like a freight train. I expected to pull in something that weighed +20lbs the way it pulled. This thing probably went about 10lbs. The guys at the marina guessed a bonita; but, nobody seemed sure. In their defense they were looking at the screen on a digital camera. So guys, a little help would be appreciated from the rookie...what is this thing.

Bonita or little tunny. Fun on light tackle, killers on grouper tackle. Best cut bait in the world, and passable shashimi if you bleed them.

I had the same exprience (spooled)two weeks ago near the St. Marks bird rack. My wife wants to go with me next time. Maybe I can use that as an excuae to buy a new rod & reel... :-D

Aucilla, no wire leader...just lots of lost grubs :-D . I had a 20lb flurocarbon leader tied on to braided line. Acutually held up pretty well.

Mjsigns, already used that excuse. Ordered a new rod and reel when I got home :-D
