OK, the first time out watched some guys on another boat using a balloon like a big Cajun Thunder. Someone tell me how they rigged and why.

Got to agree, looks fun, but not enviro friendly. Gotta be another way to do that where it would be.

Use them for kings all the time when you have no current to keep the bait up away from the boat. Just tie the balloon onto the line and put it where you want it. Same way we used to fish for bass using shiners on lake jackson.

Yep...
100+ plus ballons for a dollar, you can look at a cajun thunder for a dollar...Plus it will take one hell of a chofer to pull a ballon under

We use them in Ireland for shark and tope.
A whole atlantic mackerel (dead), is suspended below the balloon and it drifts off with tide.
You can fish 100-200 yards from the boat.
Try seeing a normal bobber at that distance.

Use the all the time, tie straight to the line, no need for a swivel or extra knot. Like Tom said, when there's no current, the wind pushes the bait away from the boat. Stick the rod in a holder on the t-top, loosen the drag (or better yet- engage your bait runner switch) and the deck is clear for your other lines. I've only lost one ballon to the environment that I can remember.
