Try, try again... In the kayak, fished the AM falling tide and caught 6 trout all + 20" 2 reds over the slot and 1 at 23". Lost 4 other trout that were nice. It was slow for the first hour and I was feeling right confused. This time of year there's so much food out there I was determined to try bait if I had to. I tried to net some white bait but all I could catch were 10" mullet. I ended up blind throwing in the grass for a few pinfish.
I kept a pinfish in the water while I threw topwater (always) & nothing was happening. Threw a catch mirrolure and straight grubs in different colors. Nothing biting while I'm thinking, how could that pinfish, still alive swimming under that cork, not catch anything?
Fine, I'll try something else. I had one big pinfish & I butchered it into strips to sweeten a 1/6 oz jig with a short white red tail shure catch grub. First cast, a 3" catfish. Second cast, a small black sea bass. Third cast I was getting harassed by pinfish so I speed up the retrieve and wasn't getting any looks at all. No choice but to slow it down and keep it in the zone. Fourth cast was different. Big trout. I lost it not long after I figured out it was a really nice fish. I was not happy about that. I've lost a lot of fish in my time but I was actually surprised at how much that one got to me. Alas, next cast, big trout, in the boat. She went 24 and on the stringer. I did real well for the next hour and a half. I had to put the anchor out to slow down the big reds. I'm glad the Mikes redfsh jigs have heavy weight hooks because standard jigs might have straightened out. I didn't have a tape but I was sure they went better than 28. The thought the other trout were at least 20 and the surest way to anger the fish gods is to keep illegal fish. Don't chance it. I measured the trout I kept before I cleaned and ate it.
One last thought, the St Croix Tidemaster rod & Shimano Symetere set up with 10lb Power Pro is an awesome combo.

Good job Lit! very good reporting as well. Now that you mention it I remeber when I first reported about the trout having empty stomachs about 3 weeks ago that same trip my son and I drug a pin fish the whole day and nothing ever touched it! Sounds like they want'm cut into bite size pieces for them don't it.

Good report, Lit. You da man! Have you ever kayaked over at Adams Beach? It is just a strip of sand that isn't accessible to boats, but looks like a kayak shouldn't have any trouble putting in. And it's a good trout area.

Lit I have been reading your post for as far back as the search button will go. I am new to the area and made my first trip to Wakulla beach road on Friday of last week. Me and a friend rented a couple kayaks from the wilderness way and made a day of the trip. There seems to be so many good areas to fish there (oyster bars, creek mouth). We got there at low tide and had to walk the kayaks quite a way before the water line. We were out all day and saw plenty of fish and even had about 10 tails off our artificial bait bitten off. Unfortunately we were unable to really hook on anything. Since you seem to have a lot of experience in the area and with kayaks, would you be willing to share some of your knowledge about the area with me? Where is the best place to head from the beach? What baits have been hitting out there? Is it me or come about 6 pm the no seeum will almost carry you off . Ok well just wanted to ask since you seem to be doing so well. I am trying to get out there again ASAP but I have like 4 tests coming up in the next couple of days. Thanks already

Sir reel, the trout had 1 small blue crab and 3 pin fish. Redfish must have been hungry. I always look.

Haven't been but it sure sounds appetizing. It’s a little east of my regular travels but now it's on my list. Is there any deep water nearby (8-12feet) ? The nearshore areas east of Aucilla are really tempting. We talked up Hickory Mounds a ways back and I haven't made it yet. It's winter fishing anyway and perfect kayak territory. There are places a kayak can get that other boats can’t and I give a lot of credence to inaccessible places (less pressure) adding up to good fishing. Truth is, it was a part of how I found fish on this trip. That's about all I'll say about that.

I can get my little jon boat in at Wakulla Beach, right? I will have to give that a try sometime!

Sure, but I'd avoid a really low tide.

I am planning a trip to Wakulla beach on November 7th, I know it's a couple of weeks away, but I will be out of town the next 2 weekends. Maybe we could get some kayakers down there for some fishing.

That would be great. I dont own my own yak but i could rent one again. I think i may try the live bait next time with a CT and see how it works. OK well keep me posted on the 7th

Possibility for me too. I never really know until nearly the night before. Kids (and wife) will do that to you.
