Dumb heavy rod question

I fish the flats. I would like to know if I hit a little deeper water, will this rod and reel be sufficient should I throw squid, pins, or troll 25's for the possible grouper:

Penn 5500SS spooled with 30LB test mono
7' boat rod, Med-Heavy, 20-40 LB rated.

Do you draw a line between a spinning rod and an "open face" for heavier game? I am not even sure of the difference between an open face and a baitcaster. Still learning.

Thanks in advance.

DB, I always thought an open face and a spinning reel were one and the same. The rig you have will work for trolling. I use 3/0 class reels and 7' medium action rods. However, if you're not sure about your reel, and want a revolving spool reel, I have a new Shimano TLD-15, and love it.

My first "legal" Grouper was caught useing a $30 surf spinning reel/rod combo from Walmart with 20# test right off the shelf trolling :o I don't fish that way no more "TLD 20 with 40# test", but it did the job when I ask it to :-D

How do you tell what is a 3/0 4/0 reel?

If you're familiar with the Penn reels, the 112H is a 3/0, the 113 is a 4/0.

I'm with these guys on the TLD line. I love my TLD 25 for trolling and grouper digging, but it does need a little more experience with both.
