After picking up some frozen shrimp at Jerry’s, meeting DP Plug and his crew, Travis and I put the Tin Can II in at the fort and headed toward the lighthouse. I had promised my son that we would go out in the boat again, and I was trying to keep my promise. Since I was in constant pain, I took along plenty of pain pills to make the trip tolerable. I also didn’t feel like going too far out and getting pounded by the waves.
This was Travis’s second time out fishing with me in the boat. I wanted him to have a good time and just catch something. The first stop was a spot across from Big Pass near the mouth of the river on the western flats. Four weeks ago I had taken my daughter to this spot and caught trout on every cast. It didn’t matter what color grub or jig was used. They weren’t picky. Well this time the fish just weren’t ready to bite, so we set a drift. The wind was blowing at 10mph out of the NE so we just drifted. When the trout decided to bite, we found most the trout in 3 feet of water at 77.5 – 77.7 degrees. We set up a drift of 1.5 miles, through about 2-300 crab traps, and ran it three times. I used a CT with a ¼ jig & chartreuse assassin tipped with shrimp. Travis insisted on just using the ¼ jig with candy corn and no CT. Travis hooked a 16â€
