Buddy Steve Reese and I hit river early on all three mornings just before first light to insure getting out of river. Water is still very dark
everywhere. Did not seem to be as trashy as the week before. On Friday we fished toward Aucilla from bank to 5 feet with virtually no resullts. Had a problem catching pinfish which is not a good sign.
We never seem to do very well on first day so kept a good attitude by making Deal's for raw oysters and mullet dinner. Awesome!
Sat am out early and down to Cabbage Creek. Into creek at daylight
and worked the creek on incoming tide with no action. Out to #1 rack and drifted in with one 24" trout on mirrolure. Up to Pinhook River and 3/4 mile up river and fished out on falling tide and across mouth of
Aucilla with no action. Down to Double Slough area and about 1:30 began throwing topwaters about 1/4 mile out. Five nice trout 16-19 and one
24" red on topwaters before calling it quits when tide topped out.
Out again for couple hours Sun am before cleaning up and heading home.
Another nice red in creekmouth.
As always, never know what to expect down there. Sat am spotted a
panther along rivebank on a log out near treeline and watched him for
about 4-5 minutes with our small flashlight. Later in morning up near
Aucilla we were on a point and looked out a quite large gator was stalking
jumping mullet out near the double crabtrap line. Steve hooked a
tarpon about 28-30" that made four jumps for us and played around boat some before deciding the game was over and headed for south Florida.
Unreal! About an hour later an eagle flew over about 50 feet and gave us a great view. How good can it get?
Except for black flies! #2%! Bloodsuckers!
