Was looking trough some stuff and came across this piece of PVC, and said, I know what i can do with that. Its 30" long, just happened to be the size I had. 80lb flouro leader crimped, and will use a 150 snap swivel on the main line to attach leader.

Why did you use crimps DS? Learn to tie a uni knot or snell and you won't regret it....I couldn't snell a garden hose a few months ago, once I learned or say took the time to....It is the cats meow....All my offshore rigs are snelled unless I'm in a hurry on a head boat

Excellent Idea-

Much easier to crimp 80lb leader than to tie a knot. But I will look at it. Besides the crimp lets the hook move more freely.

I'm sure the fish will approve of the hook being able to move

OK, it lets the bait move more natural.

until very recently I crimped at the hook, at the other end of the leader with a loop, and on the main line with a snap swivel. I REALLY like that snap swivel for fast leader changes in the heat of battle. I noticed (more than once) my partner, who was tying at the hook, was catching more fish. Maybe the fish don't like the crimp I now tie at the hook and crimp the other 2 places. I normally prepare 10-15 leaders of different strengths 50-125 lbs, and different hook sizes. I have been rolling them up...makes them coil a little I love that pvc pipe idea I'm definitly gonna use it.....THANX

Reel Fun, you still use a loop at the hook, or what are you using now.

This spring I went on a charter out of P.C. snapper fishing. On the way back in I cornered the first mate and ask him to show me the knots he was using. Of course they had pre-made leaders, but I watched him tie a few hooks on, man he was fast He showed me 3-4 knots, including the one chalk is talking about. I really don't know the name of the knot I'm using now.....but it doesn't include a loop at the hook, although I do like the loop idea. It goes through the eye twice, 2 loops, then back through the loops. It's a small knot, but seems to work well. That's the one they were using on the charter boat. I thought not using a crimp at the hook might be helpful if the fish are a little timid.....

Guess I would have to wait and see about the snapper, but so far the Grouper and AJ dont care.

I pretty much agree.........I've been using the crimp/loop at the hook for the last 3-4 years. Thought maybe a change might give me a little edge...my thinking is SAME=SAME......we'll see

Tying the leader to the main line, I use a surgeons knot. It takes me about 5 seconds to re-rig a rod after a break off.

I like using a swivel for the main line to leader connection with a clinch knot for mono or palomar for braid. I use a snell for leader to hook that is similar to the first link Chalk posted. For braid to mono or braid to braid I use a albright knot. For mono to mono I use a blood knot. Currently teaching myself how to tie a bimini for bluewater trolling this Summer.
