i have heard so many differnt storys about hooks. i have been using j hooks 1/0 (live bait short shank) for live shrimp under a CT. i have done well with this combo but i am now comming to find out that i should be using a 2/0 or 3/0 instead and that i should consider switching to circle hooks. I fish out of a kayak up here and a skiff down in SW florida (Pine island). i just what to know what kind everyone here is using for trout, reds and snook. Are there any brands you guys stick by?

Hey FSU, here's my two cents. Owner SSW Cutting Point. in a 3/0 size. 2/0 is fine also. A 1/0 tends to gut stick small fish two much. I also like Gamakatsu short shank Bait Hook in a 3/0 for finger mullet and pinfish.

I have to stick with what meat head said.....He sold me on those hooks and they work from offshore to inshore.....Circle hooks ..but that's because I can't use'm.....I have jerkitus

Seriously: A rod tip repair kit and a lighter....
Nonseriously:
For wevans: a torch, some flux and solder
For BigT: A towel
For Tincan: some other color than chartruese
For CSMarine: a muzzle to put on motor mouth Chalk
For DStockwell: a hair brush and catfish skinner
For Chalk: a change of clothes (black dress and pearls for the night)
For MJ: The number for seatow
For Cranfield: Some flowery drink and some spare fish n' chips
..everyone else needs to post more....

What's "jerk-itis" ? Is it something you get from not using circle hooks?
I am confused. Which is better "J" or "circle" hooks? Can you "set" a circle hook without releasing the fish?

Jerk-itis is the condition many freshwater bass anglers get from years of setting the hook hard enough to rip the head off many lesser jawed fish. He is basically saying its hard for him to fight the habit of setting the hook when a fish takes the bait as you would do with most other hooks except circle hooks. With circle hooks it is a no-no to set the hook. You are suppose to let the fish take the bait and then start reeling in the line without setting the hook. That way the hook sets in the corner of the mouth from the pressure of the reeling. If you try to set a hook with a circle hook you are more likely to pull the hook out of the fishes mouth. The upside to circle hooks is a great hook-up ratio if you do it properly and a lot less gut hooked fish. Also, once hooked its hard for a fish to throw a circle hook.

Tom is the master of circle hooks..He looks like something is pulling him over board at first, but he can do it.....The best way to learn is to put the rod in the rod holder and do something else.....I can't though....I have to lay the steel to them.....

Hey just a couple things I have to say: First "I went over 100 threads today " Second , I just learned why I'm not to enthused about circle hooks .. I grew-up bass fishin thats it .....thats it

so what size do you guy think for snook reds and trout?

whats brands are good?

I would say 2/0 to 3/0 is about right. Iuse those and an occasionally 4/0 depending on bait. Thicker bait the larger the hook. For snook the larger size is probably fine for the larger fish. I use Owner and Gamakatsu hooks.

Circle hooks be the shizzle.

I use the 1/0 to 3/0 mainly from trout to snapper....I have some larger ones but, I like hiding my hooks in the bait...

That could be a little hard on a livey.

Try hooking a 1/0 short shank live bait hook in the tail of a pinfish....Then try a 3/0 and see which is less visible (hidden).....Teach you I will young Jedi

1/0 - 3/0 was for trout

2/0-4/0 is what I use for and caught snapper and grouper with...
